Every child has the right to an education according to international law. But sadly, hundreds of millions of children are missing out. The reasons are numerous and complex. Sometimes it’s because children are sent to work. Sometimes it's because teenage girls are forced into marriage or fall pregnant.
These problems are societal problems - and we’ve been supporting groups of young people around the world who believe that their communities can be rallied to solve those problems.
This is a unique opportunity to invest in good. Through Shift, we’ve identified groups already achieving great success in leading change in their communities.
These groups are volunteering their time and mobilising their community behind movements to create cleaner, greener and more sustainable cities that benefit health, wealth and community.
Cities worldwide are growing at alarming rates, with children in many low- and middle-income countries making up over 50% of the urban population. Despite this rapid growth, cities are becoming less empowering and more exclusionary, especially for young people. Additionally, the growing threat of climate change is exacerbating these challenges, making urban environments even more hostile for vulnerable populations.
For example, 350-500 million children live in slums out of 1 billion slum dwellers. However, young people globally are uniting to create fair, healthy, and sustainable urban spaces. Children have the right to shape the cities of the future. Save the Children, through Shift, believes in supporting and strengthening these grassroots youth-led change movements.
